The benefits of Transcendental Meditation

Dr Nicholas Argyle is a consultant psychiatrist at North wick Pack Hospital, London. He is one of hundreds of British medical professionals who now use Transcendental Meditation.

‘With the rapidly increasing pace of modern life thousands of busy professional people in Britain have recognised the need for a way to remain calm under pressure, free from tension and fatigue, and at the peak of their mental clarity and performance. They’ve discovered that with Transcendental Meditation they can easily do this by accessing their inner resources of energy and creativity. By practising Transcendental Meditation for a short period twice a day they’re enjoying an impressive range of benefits such as clearer thinking; improved health; better quality of sleep; greater energy; improved memory, concentration and creativity; more rewarding relationships; and increased resistance to stress. The beauty of Transcendental Meditation is that it has been so thoroughly investigated. Its life enhancing effects have been verified by over 500 studies many of which have been published in leading medical and scientific journals.’

Comments from leading scientific and medical journals

Journal of Clinical Psychology 1989:
TM is twice as effective in reducing anxiety as other techniques of meditation or relaxation.
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 1989:
TM meditators are found to live longer than non-meditators
Psychological Medicine 1987:
In a survey TM meditators compared with the norm had:
55% less benign and malignant tumours
67% less joint and bone disease
87% less heart disease
And people over 40 had:
76% less surgery
74% fewer doctors visits
69% fewer hospital admissions
International Journal of Neuroscience 1982:
TM meditators show a marked reduction of the ageing process
Journal of Social Behaviour and Personality 1991:
TM is three times more effective in promoting psychological growth than other forms of meditation or relaxation

The Effects of TM on the Individual

Research consisting of 500 studies conducted at 200 universities and research institutions in 30 countries has shown a wide range of benefits, including:
  1. immediate reduction of stress and anxiety
  2. increased levels of happiness and fulfilment
  3. more stamina, energy and efficiency
  4. improved job performance and job satisfaction
  5. improved academic performance
  6. improved memory and concentration
  7. reduction of blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  8. relief from insomnia
  9. increased calm and contentment
  10. improvement in angina, bronchial asthma, diabetes, chronic and tension headache, allergies
  11. increased emotional stability, self confidence and esteem
  12. decreased dependency on cigarettes, tranquillizers, alcohol, antidepressants, sleeping pills and non-prescribed drugs
  13. reversal of biological ageing

People start noticing benefits right from the start, and these accumulate with regular practise.

Approximately 6000 medical doctors in the USA alone have learned TM and many prescribe it as an effective, non-medical way to reduce stress and stress-related disorders, which are at the basis of 80-90% of all illness.

Our programme

Our programme is an advanced aspect of Transcendental Meditation. It trains the individual to think and act from the level of transcendental consciousness, greatly enhancing the co-ordination between mind and body, and developing the ability to enliven Natural Law to support all avenues of life to fulfil one's desires.

The effects of TM on Society

Scientific research has shown the effectiveness of TM not only for reducing individual stress but also for reducing social stress and violence. This is known as the Maharishi Effect, or group effect.

43 studies have shown that group practice of Transcendental Meditation and the advanced TM-Sidhi programme including Yogic Flying reduces crime and violence in society, decreases accidents and illness, and leads to greater progress towards peace, improved quality of life and social and economic trends. This research has been published in leading scientific journals.

How does the Group Effect work?

Scientist theorize that consciousness is a fundamental field which pervades nature - just like electromagnetism or gravity. This field has been identified by leading physicists as the unified field, the most basic level of nature. In much the same way as light waves spread through the electromagnetic field, TM enlivens the field of consciousness (unified field) and spreads an influence of coherence throughout the consciousness of society. This increase of coherence in collective consciousness reduces stress and violence and promotes harmony in society.

A 5 year study on TM users, published in a major medical journal, found that they required less than half the amount of healthcare than controls. They needed less medical treatment in all I 7 disease categories including 87’4 less for heart disease and 55% less for cancer.

A study conducted at Stanford University found that TM was more than twice as effective for relieving the mental effects of stress as all other meditation and relaxation techniques including progressive muscle relaxation.'

An analysis of published research on physiological changes during TM, including breath rate, skin resistance and blood lactate levels, revealed a much more profound degree of relaxation than resting with eyes closed.

Several published studies have found that during TM the brain exhibits a unique pattern of coherent activity. This correlates with improved mental performance including: increased creativity and intelligence; improved learning ability; and improved mind-body coordination.
